MARTIN EDER: The Poetry of Matter
dates 22.02.2025 – 30.03.2025
Zuecca Projects is delighted to present the exhibition The Poetry of Matter, by German artist Martin Eder, featuring a selection of paintings produced by Eder in the last years. The exhibition is held at Squero Castello, Venice, from February 22 to March 30, 2025.
Through his artworks, the artist transports us, amid leaden colors and voluptuous symbols, to a medieval world of devoured hearts, nightmare maidens, and skies filled with feral angels.
Death — or its remains: is this what emerges from Martin Eder’s paintings?
Ancient metamorphoses blend with the contemporary, offering portraits of parallel worlds. Like a tarot card, each painting is a solitary, potent allegory that, when placed in dialogue with the others, creates an entirely new alphabet. A dreamlike, hallucinatory language where human and animal bodies appear as remnants of themselves: violent, melancholic, and drenched in pleasure.
The cruelty of the sacred permeates Martin Eder’s works, steeped in a kitschy pop spirit reminiscent of ecclesiastical icons. As in Christian symbolism, women and beasts are the creative cornerstones of Eder’s art. Surrealism and the Gothic intertwine in his modern martyr-girls, with their cigarettes-in-mouth and seductive tattoos.
With references spanning from Dürer to Epic Fantasy, Eder depicts the beauty of diverse bodies, while also proposing a subtle critique of contemporary society and its use of cruelty as a form of mass communication.
Martin Eder (born 1968 in Augsburg, lives and works in Berlin) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg and at the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden, with Eberhard Bosslet. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad, including solo exhibitions at the Marlborough Gallery New York, the Newport Street Gallery London, the MUDAM Luxembourg, the Mönchehaus Museum Goslar, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, the Geementemuseum The Hague, the Kunsthalle Mannheim and the Kunsthalle im Glaspalast Augsburg. His work is part of various large collections such as the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Seavest Collection of Contemporary American Realism, New York; the Gemeente Museum, The Hague; and the Deutsche Bank Collection, among others.
